I just felt like doing this to know how I sound and look on camera hehe. It turns out that I need to lose a little bit of weight. I’m back to using a Gibson Les Paul and i’m happy. This is my first Standard by the way. I used to have Customs. Somehow I think the Standard is cooler. Customs are for people who like a lot of gold hardware and I don’t. Soundwise they’re the same. I got the ebony which was my dream guitar a long time back. If I find a reasonably-priced cherry sunburst, i’d get that too. Time to let go of my PRS SE Custom.

Help! My Remote Desktop session on VPN just froze / hung May 10, 2009

I usually work from home using a VPN connection. Through a Windows Secure Application Manager (SAM) Session, one of the applications I would open is Remote Desktop to connect to my PC in the office. So as i’m working on my web project trying to catch a deadline, BAM!!! the Remote Desktop just freezes! I noticed that a Flash application that ran on my web page had caused this. So one thing to remember, disable Flash on your remote pc’s browser before using Remote Desktop. If you’re using Firefox, go to Tools -> Add-ons and search for Shockwave Flash. Click Disable. Now what should you do if it’s too late and your Remote Desktop has already hung? Try this, restart your Remote Desktop application. On the log-on window, Click Options and click on the Display tab. On the Colors panel set it to 256 Colors. Then try logging-in. I was able to close the browser. It worked for me! Hope it works for you.

My review on a Fender American Series Stratocaster May 3, 2009

Price Paid: US $500 used

Features: 7/10
The serial number starts with N9 so its a 1999 model. It’s made in Corona, California. It’s got 22 frets, a 5-way selector, and an S/S/S pickup configuration which are all passive stock pickups. Its got a sunburst finish, maple neck. It’s got the newer bridge style of Fender (looks like a Wilkinson) with a standard tremolo arm. Its got the original Fender hardcase shaped like a strat and it came with a Fender strap. Very basic… doesn’t have that much features.

Sound: 7/10
I never really got satisfied with single coils when playing heavy rock. Now that i’m playing music other than rock (pop, funk, etc), i’m beginning to love the single coil sound. I just can’t get rid of the noise and hum! I use a Peavey Chorus 212 and sometimes a Crate GX-60. Someday, i’ll buy a humbucker for the bridge position for a sweeter overdriven sound.

Action, Fit, & Finish: 7/10
I got the guitar slightly used. I had problems setting up the height of the saddles since the screws had rusted and there was no way to adjust them anymore. So now 2 of my saddles are uneven. So far thats the only problem i’ve noticed.

Reliability/Durability: 7/10
This guitar will withstand live playing. I chose this to be my main axe now since its very comfortable to play. Its not heavy. The strap buttons are locked for safety. The hardware will last however when I got this guitar, the bridge screws were rusted already. I guess the previous owner’s hands were sweaty. I need to buy new saddles for the bridge.

Customer Support: N/A
Never dealt with customer support.

Overall Rating: 7/10
I’ve been playing since 1987 and I have a collection of guitars. A PRS CE-22, Gibson Super 400, Valley Arts M-series, etc. If this guitar were stolen or lost, of course i would feel bad but I think i’d buy a PRS instead. Nothing compares to a PRS! I wish Fender Strats would come out with a humbucker for the bridge that’s a size of a single coil. Not lace-sensors. They’re too clean sounding.

Price Paid: US $1300 brand new at Guitar Center San Francisco

Features: 10/10
I believe this was made in 1995 in USA. 22 frets, carved maple top, 5 way selector via a knob, H/H pickup configuration, Dragon pickups (passive electronics), Rosewood fingerboard with bird-inlays, emerald green finish, tremolo, locking PRS machine heads.

Sound: 9/10
My music style is rock and it is very suitable! I love the sweet heavy overdriven sound! I use a Fender “The Twin” Amp as well as a small Crate GX-60 and it sounds great! It has a rich full sound. If you want a strat sound sorry, it sounds more like a Les Paul. The sound is cleaner though compared to a Les Paul.

Action, Fit, & Finish: 9/10
I love the action of this guitar! I’ve never adjusted anything since I bought the guitar brand new. The only thing that bothered me was locking machine head architecture. Somehow if your high E string was too light (meaning .009 or .008), it would be difficult to lock the string! You’d have to have a heavy gauge so that it would lock instantly. But changing strings was very easy and fast! I remember during a gig when I broke a string, it took me only a minute to replace the broken string and it didn’t need to be stretched! It also had a noisy pickup selector.

Reliability/Durability: 10/10
This guitar is very reliable! The hardware and finish will last! Very dependable guitar! No need to bring a backup guitar anymore since changing strings can be very fast!!!

Customer Support: N/A
Never had serious problems with it but I guess customer support is available.

Overall Rating: 9/10
I’ve been playing since 1987. I own a Fender Strat American Series, Gibson Super 400. I love this guitar but I had to sell it because I needed the money. I’m actually saving to buy a new one again. I miss the guitar… sob…

My review on a Valley Arts M-Series May 3, 2009

Product: Valley Arts M-Series
Price Paid: US $300

Features : 9
This guitar was designed by Michael McGuirre himself. It was hand-made in Japan in 1992. Its got 22 frets, solid top, Master volume and tone and 5-way selector. Pickup configuration is S/S/S. All EMG active pickups. Body material is swamp ash and neck is ebony on maple. Finish is Nitro-cellulose lacquer. The body style is basically a strat. Tremolo is Hi-density, non-locking. Tuners are Valley Arts. Neck/Scale length is 25 1/2.

Sound : 7
Its suits my music style very well. It’s great for funk, jazz, and pop. I use a Crate GX-60 with it. No noise at all! It’s got a rich, bright sound. Since this guitar has a 5 way selector, it can make different types of twangy or clean sounds. With overdrive, this thing can also growl but not as powerful as a humbucker. For the dislikes, i’m not really used to active pickups so i’m still having difficulty getting the sound i want.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The reason why I bought this guitar was because of the action and the comfort in playing it. Even if you put a heavy gauge of strings, it still feels light and can easily be played. The frets are great and the intonation is great!

Reliability/Durability : 10
Yup its toughly built! I bought this guitar also for gigging. I have other guitars but i’d rather not bring them out of the house. This one is my main axe now because its easy to play and is tough!

Customer Support : No Opinion
Ive never contacted customer support.

Overall Rating : 9
I’ve been playing for 12 years. I own a PRS, Gibson Les Paul Custom, Fender Strat Plus Deluxe, Hagstrom H2N, Gibson Super 400. For the amps, I have a Crate GX-60, a 1972 Fender Bassman 50. If this Valley Arts were stolen, I would have a hard time finding another one coz this axe is RARE!!! I love its action and durability. For the sound, i think i’ll replace the pickups to passive ones (personal preference). But overall I think this guitar is superb!

Product: Yamaha Studio Lord
Price Paid: US $500 used

Features : 8
Not sure what year this was made. Serial number is 016641, Made in Japan. 22 frets, ebony fingerboard with trapezoid inlays. Cherry Sunburst. 3 piece body with binding. 2 humbuckers with chrome covers.

Sound : 10
I play rock and jazz. This guitar suits my music style. It sounds exactly like a Gibson. The sustain is incredible! I play it through a Fender “The Twin” amp. It has a rich full sound. No noise. There’s a 3 way switch. I use all. The rhythm and treble is good for soloing. The middle position is great for rhythm and jazz soloing.

Action, Fit, & Finish : 10
The action is perfect! Intonation is perfect! I love the craftmanship of this guitar! They really copied everything in a Gibson.

Reliability/Durability : 10
They copied everything from Gibson even the weight. This guitar is heavy! but its also very durable. This guitar is more than 20 years old but it still looks beautiful. Very dependable!

Customer Support : No Opinion
I dont think they’ll still support this thing. It was a lawsuit guitar!

Overall Rating : 10
I’ve been playing for 16 years. I used to be a Les Paul user. I shifted to a Strat 2 years ago but when I saw this baby, I went back to playing a Les Paul. I’ll never sell this thing. The sound and action is perfect for me. It even looks and plays like the real thing!
